Artificial sweeteners offer the taste of sweetness without any calories and appear to be the answer to diabetes and weight loss. Many people use artificial sweeteners in tea and drink zero calorie drinks as there is belief that this practice is safe and has health benefits. Many people have been using artificial sweeteners as a replacement of natural sugar for their diet. However, recent studies show there can be adverse effects from the use of artificial sweeteners. There can be several adverse effects of artificial sweeteners on one’s health. Some health risks are as follows. 

Weight gain
If you are wondering if artificial sweeteners are safe and have no side effects then you are probably wrong. There have been studies which show that artificial sweeteners can cause unwanted weight gain in individuals. According to the Santiano heart study men and women were observed over a period of 7 to 8 years. It was observed that men and women who took diet beverages or drinks with artificial sweeteners had significant increase in weight than those who did not drink those beverages at all. Such drinks area also a factor why the obesity is still on the increase.

Metabolic syndrome
For those who are wondering what is metabolic syndrome, it is a number of diseases such as high blood pressure, raised blood sugar level, increased lipid profile, high fat in body and high levels of cholesterol in the body. Latest research and studies indicate that drinks which offer artificial sweeteners or those who use artificial sweeteners in tea which may contain Acesulfame potassium, aspartame, neotame and Saccharin are at increased risk for metabolic syndrome. These artificial sweeteners play havoc in your body. If you are one of those people who are using these sweeteners, try to quit them as soon as possible. Artificial sugars are not good for health.

Type 2 diabetes
Recent studies indicate that people who use potassium, aspartame, neotame and Saccharin and other artificial sweeteners, are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Those people who use artificial substitutes may have amplified symptoms of diabetes. It is highly dangerous to get your body consume these substitutes. It is wise to quit these substitutes all together to enjoy a healthy life.

Hypertension
Latest studies also show that those who use artificial sweeteners are more prone to hyper tension.  A group of people who took artificial sweeteners for studied for 1 year and compared to those who didn’t take at all. The results showed an increase incidence of hypertension in those patients who took these sweeteners.
